What Is a Wumpus?

Exploding Wumpus: Wumpidae explodere

Exploding Wumpus

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Mammalia

Order: Perissodactyla

Family: Rhinocerotidae

Genus: Wumpidae

Species: Explodere

General Description:The exploding Wumpus is the most common of all the Wumpus species. The exploding Wumpus is a naturally herding animal and should never be seen as a threat to anyone unless provoked. The exploding Wumpus gets its name from its penchant for exploding. While an exploding Wumpus can just explode with no warning; the explosion is usually triggered by physical contact. Any physical contact with an exploding Wumpus causes it to explode, but only to cause an explosion of a size proportionate to the force applied and only in the location of the impact, causing older Wumpi to often look cratered in appearance. The exploding Wumpus is not hostile but could be deadly if someone was to be caught in an explosion. The Wumpus never really seems to notice it’s explosion, a Wumpus that has had its back explode per say can still wander around for as long as it wants to without feeling or noticing anything. An exploding Wumpus cannot die in the traditional sense; it does not feel pain and can live without any of its limbs. A Wumpus only really dies when any of its vital body parts, such as its head or its upper body explode. When a Wumpus loses more than 70% of it’s body mass it dies. A Wumpus explodes completely when it dies, it leaves no corpse. All Wumpi species save for the Cave Wumpus make bleating noises just like sheep (baa).

Physical Characteristics: An exploding Wumpus has only three dull grinding teeth; it has two curled and ridged grey horns and a large white fluffy, hairy body. The Wumpus’s front legs have 3 large bear-like claws each, for traction, and the back legs each have one very large nail, similar to rhinoceros toes, but there is only one and it is much larger.

Habitat: The exploding Wumpus is a plains animal; they only inhabit large, open plains and valleys, often with rivers in large groups with other Wumpi. Exploding Wumpi prefer temperate to drier climates as large amounts of precipitation can often trigger their exploding reflexes; exploding Wumpi take shelter during rain.

Hunting and diet: The exploding Wumpus does not hunt, it is herbivorous and only grazes on grass. Scientists do not know how the Wumpus digests its food as since no whole corpse has ever been recovered, a Wumpus’s organs have never been properly observed, or even proven to exist. A Wumpus does not excrete waste.

Mating, reproduction: The Wumpus is a very mysterious animal and has never been proven to reproduce. The population of Wumpi in an area grows exponentially only when nobody is paying attention to it. More Wumpi only appear when you have your back turned, they seem to walk in from wherever you aren’t looking at the time.

Exploding Wumpus (smoke variety): Wumpidae explodere- smychein

Smoke Wumpus

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Mammalia

Order: Perissodactyla

Family: Rhinocerotidae

Genus: Wumpidae

Species: Explodere

Sub Species: Smychein

General Description: Wumpidae explodere- smychein is a sub-species of the more common, exploding Wumpus. The smoke exploding Wumpus functions in entirely the same way as a standard exploding Wumpus, the only difference being that it releases a concealing cloud of thick grey smoke when it explodes.

Physical Characteristics: The smoke exploding Wumpus is similar to its parent species with only one physical difference: The hair of the smoke Wumpus is much thicker, longer and darker.

Habitat:The smoke exploding Wumpus inhabits the same areas as the standard exploding Wumpus but it also inhabits rockier mountainous areas that standard exploding Wumpi do not.

Hunting and diet:This species of Wumpus also feeds herbivorously and only grazes on grass, it also eats certain rocks and the mineral sulfur when it can be found.

Mating, reproduction: Smoke exploding Wumpi “reproduce” in identical fashion to standard exploding Wumpi.

Exploding Wumpus (flash variety): Wumpidae explodere- flaschen

Flash Wumpus

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Mammalia

Order: Perissodactyla

Family:Rhinocerotidae

Genus: Wumpidae

Species: Explodere

Sub Species: flaschen

General Description: Wumpidae explodere- flaschen is another sub-species of the more common, exploding Wumpus. The flash exploding Wumpus functions in entirely the same way as a standard exploding Wumpus and the smoke exploding Wumpus, the only difference being that it releases a blinding white flash when it explodes.

Physical Characteristics:The flash exploding Wumpus is similar to both the standard exploding Wumpus and the smoke exploding Wumpus, with only a few physical differences: The hair of the flash Wumpus is the same as the standard exploding Wumpus but its horns are smooth and shiny light grey, its feet are also the same only the claws and toes are a shinier black than usual. Lastly, the tail of the flash Wumpus hangs lower than the others and has highlights of lighter hair.

Habitat:The flash exploding Wumpus inhabits the same areas as the standard exploding Wumpus and does not inhabit the rocky, mountainous areas of the smoke exploding Wumpus. The flash exploding Wumpus is able to inhabit even drier, desert like areas as opposed to the other species.

Hunting and diet: This species of Wumpus also feeds herbivorously and only grazes on grass; it enjoys the occasional fine sand to eat and considers magnesium powder to be an extra delicious special treat when it can be provided.

Mating, reproduction: Flash exploding Wumpi “reproduce” in identical fashion to standard exploding Wumpi.

Docile Wumpus: Wumpidae docilis

Docile Wumpus

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Mammalia

Order: Perissodactyla

Family: Rhinocerotidae

Genus: Wumpidae

Species: docilis

General Description: The docile Wumpus is considered a separate species from the exploding Wumpus and not a subspecies. The docile Wumpus is really the exact replica of the exploding Wumpus only differentiating in the fact that it does not explode. This Wumpus still feels no pain when injured and can survive without limbs but when it dies, its corpse explodes; the docile Wumpus just does not explode randomly or through provocation.

Physical Characteristics: The docile Wumpus does not differ from a standard exploding Wumpus in appearance.

Habitat:A docile Wumpus will inhabit the exact same areas as the standard exploding Wumpus and very often will co-habituate in the same herds, completely undetectable from the deadly sister species. The docile Wumpus has been observed living in rainier climates than standard exploding Wumpi, such as forests and lakesides. The more frequent rain in those areas cannot trigger a docile Wumpus to explode.

Hunting and diet:Docile Wumpus only graze grass and short plants, such as wildflowers. Docile Wumpi find tulips especially delicious.

Mating, reproduction: The docile Wumpus “reproduces” in the same way that the standard exploding Wumpus and subspecies do, they appear when nobody is looking.

Cave Wumpus: Wumpidae cava

Cave Wumpus

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Mammalia

Order: Carnivora

Family: Ursidae

Genus: Wumpidae

Species: Cava

General Description: The cave Wumpus is the only Wumpus species with a number of significant differences from the other species. The cave Wumpus is the only truly ferocious species of Wumpus and certainly the only species that poses an intentional threat to other creatures. The cave Wumpus, much like Wumpidae docilis, does not explode until it is killed. Cave Wumpi also do not herd, they exist only as single hunters. Cave Wumpi sound similar to bears and only really emit low growls and very occasional roars.

Physical Characteristics: The cave Wumpus boasts thicker than normal, very dark grey fur with five sharp teeth and the replacement of it’s back toes with two more sets of deadly claws.

Habitat: Cave Wumpi spend most of their lives in caves and in very remote mountainous regions all over the world, preferring the colder, drier and more barren landscapes. They live in large winding caves when they can, but go for really any dark cavernous home they can settle into.

Hunting and diet: Unfortunately, the cave Wumpus is the only carnivorous Wumpus species and with its size it becomes quite a deadly predator. Most cave Wumpus wait in their caves for prey to wander to them and can spend very long periods of time without food, a cave Wumpus will go out of the cave to hunt only when very desperate for sustenance. A cave Wumpus will devour anything and everything that enters its cave, its favourite treats are would-be hunters sent to destroy it.

Mating, reproduction: Cave Wumpus share their reproductive methods with the other species of Wumpus and just appear in unoccupied caves when nobody is expecting it, making their known locations to be very unpredictable and deadly environments.
